Take Action on Climate and Biodiversity now!

... but how? Ireland has a very simple goal on climate – to reduce its  Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 7% each year. Has it ever come close to reaching that target? Not even close.

Will we be any better at hitting our biodiversity targets?

Not at this rate! Again, our government has announced plans to protect 30% of our lands, waters and wetlands by 2030 - but we don’t see the results so far.

So, what’s to be done?

Like someone said, we’re sick of the blah, blah, blah. Oxfam Ireland is organising a grassroots campaign to link with people across Ireland – students, protestors and ordinary citizens - with one simple aim: to make sure the government reaches its targets!

How are you going to achieve that?

We mightn’t - but we’ll give it a hell of a shot! By bringing people together, and supporting their ideas and energy, we hope to channel a wave of energy towards the Irish government and, by using the political system cleverly, pressurize them into action.

Hold on, the political system - isn’t that the government?

Well, yes and no. Our parliament still has the power to hold the government to account. We will put your official questions, your demands for action and results, through TDs and Senators from all parties to ministers and the Taoiseach.

Is that it, questions in the Dáil?

Absolutely not! We will hold meetings that bring people together from across the country, link with similar movements in Spain, Denmark and France, and run a national media campaign to highlight our demands, actions and results. Join us on the 7% campaign, let’s give this our best shot!
