Digital Rights at Oxfam Ireland

Digital technologies (such as the internet, social media, and AI) are positively transforming our world in ways we never could have imagined—but these developments have also introduced new threats to our fundamental human rights. Digital technologies can also replicate and even deepen inequalities we see offline—creating a gap between those who benefit from the digital transformation, and those who don’t.

That's why we need digital rights.

Digital rights protect our human rights in the digital age—making technology safer, fairer, and more inclusive, especially for people affected by poverty and injustice.

Oxfam Ireland is working towards an equal digital future: a vibrant, creative, dynamic, and innovative ecosystem that is safe, secure, and built on a foundation of trust and human rights, where everyone has the power to participate.

The ReCIPE Project (Recentering the Civic Internet through Partner Engagement) aims to cultivate a rights-respecting digital ecosystem that is values-based, human-centric and safe for civil society actors and human rights defenders.

Led by Oxfam Ireland and co-funded by the European Union, the project runs from 2024 - 2027 in partnership with organisations from 10 countries facing high risk of digital rights issues.

Focus Areas:

Strengthening civil society

We offer trainings, workshops, and tools to help build digital skills. These resources help organisations reduce digital inequality, support their communities, and protect digital rights.

Amplifying voices

We work with civil society groups in the Global South so they can lead in digital rights discussions. Together, we encourage governments, institutions, and companies to create laws and policies that promote digital inclusion and safety.

Increasing access

We study where knowledge gaps exist and learn about the challenges different communities face in accessing digital technologies. Then we create resources and campaigns to help address those challenges.
