The right to essential services
Lillian, Zimbabwe
Lillian lives in Zimbabwe. “I have HIV. My husband’s also got HIV. It’s very helpful [to have received goats, chickens, seeds and a hygiene kit from Oxfam] because I’m now able to pay school fees and buy food and cooking oil. I’m trying to be a living example of a person coping with HIV, so that my family can learn from me.”
Ashma and baby Edwina, Sierra Leone
Mala lives in Sierra Leone with her baby. “I came into hospital at 6 o’clock in the morning and I delivered at 10 o’clock. There were no problems and I went home the same day. It was all free. I’m happy my baby is healthy and eating and sleeping well. I came to hospital three times to see the doctor when I was pregnant and they gave me some medicine.”
Samuel, Mozambique
Samuel lives in Mozambique. “As soon as I started to feel better I decided I wanted to tell other people about the treatment. Oxfam helped me to create this group. We are men and women living openly and positively with HIV. Together we have a louder voice. We want to try to end stigma and discrimination. The treatment we are receiving helps us to feel good. And when we are feeling good we can go out and raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.”
Constance, Kenya
Constance lives in Kenya. “It's good to be at school. I just like to learn, but mathematics is my favourite subject. I get the best marks in mathematics. I feel happiest when I'm studying, or when I am helping my brothers. I study my notes at home, and when I have homework I finish it at home. I think most of the girls who want to go to school are able to go. Sometimes we play football at school, and I enjoy playing. We have a good girls’ team, and we play other schools.”
How we do it
We’re helping women and men affected by poverty and injustice to access vital services like healthcare, HIV and AIDS prevention and support, water, sanitation and education. Thanks to your incredible support, we are:- Demanding national governments deliver good quality services in health, education, water and sanitation, especially for women and excluded groups.
- Supporting trade unions, indigenous peoples’ movements and civil society groups to hold governments accountable for the delivery of these services.
- Ensuring better policies and more funding from rich countries and international institutions, as well as making sure they honour promises they’ve made on aid and debt reduction.
