One year of PostBack: 44,000 donation bags ordered through Oxfam Ireland and An Post initiative
In its first 12 months, the initiative has kept tens of thousands of kilos of clothing in circulation, helping to reduce waste in Ireland, where an estimated 63,000 tonnes of textiles go to landfill each year.
Oxfam Ireland’s PostBack initiative, delivered in partnership with An Post, has seen 44,000 free donation bags ordered by households across Ireland in its first year, making it easier than ever to donate clothes responsibly.
Designed to remove barriers to reuse, PostBack allows people to order a free bag online, fill it at home, and either arrange a doorstep collection or drop it at their local post office — all at no cost.
"The public response to PostBack has been hugely encouraging. It shows what’s possible when responsible choices are made simple. By connecting homes directly to the circular economy, we can deliver real environmental and social impact. Donations support Oxfam Ireland’s shops and fund humanitarian and development work, including food security, gender equality and climate justice programmes."— Mark Sweeney, Supply Chain and Business Development Manager at Oxfam Ireland.
Julie Gill, Commercial Marketing Director at An Post, said:
“An Post is proud to connect communities across Ireland with accessible ways to donate, reuse and recycle. Our nationwide network enables customers to donate from their front door or local Post Office. We’re proud to support our customers in reducing waste, giving items another life, and playing an active role in the circular economy.”
Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of Community Foundation Ireland, said:
“Community Foundation Ireland is delighted to support the ambition and leadership shown by Oxfam Ireland in delivering the PostBack initiative through the Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme. PostBack shows what’s possible when innovation, collaboration and support come together. We congratulate Oxfam on this one-year milestone and look forward to the initiative deliver lasting impact in the year’s ahead.”
Following a successful first year, PostBack has received additional Government-backed support through the Circular Economy Innovation Grant Scheme to expand further.
The initiative has also been recognised at the Drapers Fashion Awards, the RDS Circularity Award and the Business & Finance ESG Awards.
As it enters its second year, Oxfam Ireland is encouraging households to continue turning unwanted clothes into positive change for people and planet.
