Speak out: Keep Families Together

Keep families together

Dear Taoiseach, I support the Right to Refuge for all people fleeing conflict and persecution. I urge you to change the rules to keep refugee families together and help them find safety in Ireland.

Families fleeing war, persecution and disaster are being torn apart. Relatives are being separated and trapped in different countries while seeking safety, many don’t even know if family members left behind will be able to escape. Thousands of these people are children, in fact, over 90,000 children travelling alone without parents or guardians sought asylum in Europe in 2015.

We need to give people the chance to escape safely, legally and with their families, rather than being forced into the hands of smugglers, traffickers or onto unsafe boats. Two years ago, Ireland committed to receive 4,000 people by the end of 2017 through the Irish Refugee Protection Programme, but so far less than a third have arrived. And right now, Ireland’s rules are separating families and making it impossible for those who have been divided to be reunited.

Keeping families together allows them to support and care for each other during a difficult time as well as offering protection. Simple changes to Ireland’s rules would allow us to welcome more vulnerable refugees and play our part in responding to this unprecedented global crisis.

Please sign our petition and help us force the Government to live up to its commitments and allow refugees in Ireland to bring families members in danger here, including relatives like grandparents, nephews and nieces and young adults.
