Zimbabwe Braces for Deepening Hunger

Oxfam steps in as rainfall shortages threaten lives and livelihoods

Zimbabwe is facing a worsening humanitarian crisis. Forecasts predict below-normal rainfall from October to December 2024, putting millions at risk of hunger, malnutrition, and disease.

Families in rural areas like Buhera, Bulilima, Gutu, and Mberengwa are already struggling, and with the next harvest in jeopardy, their resilience is wearing thin. With crops failing and incomes drying up, many are forced to sell their few remaining assets or rely on casual labour just to survive.

The dry conditions also mean limited access to safe water, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera.

In response, Oxfam is distributing food to the hardest-hit communities, helping families get through the crisis while also working to protect their long-term well-being.

This emergency response is part of a broader effort to support people before the situation becomes catastrophic, a vital step in breaking the cycle of vulnerability and building resilience in the face of climate shocks.
