Torrential Rains Leave Devastation in Mali and Niger

During the 2024 rainy season, communities across the Sahel, stretching through Chad, Niger, Mali, Mauritania and northern Burkina Faso, faced unprecedented rainfall, with levels recorded at 120% to 600% above the historical average. In Mali and Niger, the impact has been especially severe.

In Bla, Mali, torrential rains in July and August destroyed homes, latrines, water points, and vital farmland, wiping out crops and livelihoods. The sudden and extreme flooding caught many by surprise, as rivers and streams overflowed at a scale not seen in decades.

“We don't want any more flooding in Bla,” said Youssouf Baba, Head of Section for the Promotion and Monitoring of Social Safety Nets at Mali's National Directorate for Social Protection and Solidarity Economy.

We are asking international organisations and technical and financial partners to support the Malian government in managing the flood crisis in Bla in particular, and in other localities across Mali in general.

Oxfam, alongside Mali’s social development and solidarity economy department, has launched a joint mission to assess the emergency response and identify critical gaps in support. While immediate relief efforts are underway, more funding and technical assistance are urgently needed to meet people’s basic needs and help communities recover and rebuild.

The climate crisis continues to intensify extreme weather events in vulnerable regions like the Sahel. Without stronger global support, these devastating floods will only grow more frequent and more deadly.
