Supporting Women Miners in Kenya
Empowering women in Turkana County’s mining sector
Turkana County, a vast and arid region in northern Kenya, is a land of contrasts. Known for its rich culture and precious minerals, the county relies heavily on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) as a vital economic activity. Yet women miners often face limited access to markets, financing, and formal support.
Through the FAIR4ALL PVP grant, Transparency International-Kenya, the Association for Women in Energy and Extractives, Community Action for Nature Conservation (CANCO), Kenya Human Rights Commission, and the Institute of Public Finance Kenya, supported by Oxfam, are changing this.
By building skills, improving safety, supporting formal registration, and connecting women to fair markets, the project is helping ensure women miners receive a fair share from the gemstones and gold value chains.
Ann Loutei washes gold mine rock in a metal tray in Turkana County, Kenya. Like many women miners, Ann balances her work with family life:
“Gold mining is my daily job. I wake up, prepare my children for school and make breakfast then proceed to work at the mines from 8 am–6 pm,” she explains.
Projects supported by Oxfam and local partners are helping women like Ann improve safety, build skills, and access fair markets.
