Stories from Inle and Oxfam’s Emergency Response

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28th, Oxfam teams have been working closely with communities in the affected regions. One of the hardest-hit areas is Myaung Wa Gyi village in Inle, southern Shan State, where homes were not only damaged but in some cases swallowed entirely by the lake.

The destruction has left families with almost nothing. As part of our immediate emergency response, Oxfam teams are on the ground speaking with villagers to understand their most urgent needs. Access to clean water, hygiene, and basic sanitation emerged as top concerns.

In response, Oxfam has begun distributing hygiene kits to affected households in Inle. Each kit is designed to support a family’s health and dignity in these critical early days. A set includes essentials such as:

  • 1 water bucket and 2 bathing cups
  • 6 laundry soap bars and 12 bathing soaps
  • Toothbrushes for both adults (3) and children (2)
  • 2 tubes of toothpaste (150g each)
  • 1 bottle of shampoo
  • 2 drinking cups
  • 1 nail clipper, 1 comb, and 2 bathing towels

These items may seem basic, but in a crisis, they can make a world of difference. They help prevent the spread of disease, offer comfort amidst chaos, and provide a sense of normalcy for families who have lost so much.

The needs remain great. With homes submerged, infrastructure shattered, and nearly 20 million people already in need of humanitarian assistance before the earthquake, ongoing support is essential.

We’ll continue to share stories and updates from affected communities in the days ahead. What we’re seeing is not only destruction, but resilience, solidarity, and the importance of showing up for one another in times of crisis.
