Restoring Hope in Gaza’s Greenhouses
How one farmer is rebuilding his livelihood amidst destruction and uncertainty.
In the heart of the Gaza Strip, in the Zawaya area, Walid walks between rows of green plants alongside his children. Just months ago, this greenhouse was a scene of destruction, his crops flattened, his livelihood ripped away by war.
Forced to flee his cherished land, Walid returned to find not only his plants gone but also the sense of safety his family once had. “We couldn’t even feel safe leaving our homes,” he recalls.
The destruction of agricultural land in Gaza is more than the loss of crops, it’s a blow to food security, local economies, and entire communities. Farms are bombed, access to goods is blocked, and humanitarian aid is restricted, leaving families struggling to survive.
With support from the oPt Humanitarian Fund, United Nations OCHA occupied Palestinian territory, Oxfam, and the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees (PARC), Walid is gradually restoring his farm. His yields are improving, though challenges remain, shortages of seeds, limited resources, and the constant threat of renewed violence.
Walid’s story is one of resilience, but it’s also a reminder: the people of Gaza need lasting peace.
