Microgrants to Women-Led Groups in Kenya

Empowering communities hit by climate crises with cash, care, and resilience

In Marsabit, Kenya, Oxfam, in partnership with the Marsabit Women Advocacy Development Organization (MWADO), is supporting communities facing the dual challenges of drought, flooding, and food insecurity. Through the Survivor and Community-Led Response (SCLR) approach, local groups receive small cash grants that allow them to lead their own recovery efforts.

The SCLR model recognises that people affected by crises are both the first and last responders. By providing microgrants to women-led community groups and self-help organisations, Oxfam is putting power and resources directly into the hands of those mobilising on the ground. This enables rapid, tailored responses that scale interventions and increase their impact.

Alongside these community group cash transfers, Oxfam and partners are delivering multi-purpose cash assistance and gender protection services to the most drought-affected women and their families. This holistic approach strengthens community-based protection and resilience in a gender-responsive way, ensuring women and their communities can recover, rebuild, and thrive despite the challenges of climate emergencies.
