Learning to work together in Uganda
In Karamoja, a community-led programme is helping families share decisions, rebuild relationships, and earn together.
Lokut and Kachinga's relationship was on the brink of collapse, due to Lokut's debilitating alcoholism. Now the couple, who live in Karamoja in Uganda, are working together. They participated in a programme learning about the GALS (Gender Action Learning System). This was delivered by our partner National Association of Women in Uganda (NAWOU).
Through GALS, Lokut realised the value of working together as a family. He now works with his wife on creating home projects that will help her to earn money.
GALS is a community-led methodology that changes power relations between women and men through joint planning and decision-making. Visual diagrams are used to address gender and power imbalances.
The project
This project is part of the Irish Aid funded Irish Civil Society Partnership (ICSP) grant.
In Uganda, it is being implemented in Moroto, Amudat, and Nakapiripirit districts, and seeks to achieve a just and empowered community in the Karamoja sub-region.
