The lives you’ll change

By purchasing this Heroes gift, you’re helping women like Dolores Benitez (pictured) to educate other women about their rights.

Dolores (31) is the administrator of COMUCAP (the Co-ordination of Farming Women in La Paz) in Honduras, which was set up by women who had survived domestic violence.

It began broadcasting 'Always Alive' – a show to educate women about their rights. “Women had not dared to take control of their lives or their finances.

Women had not dared to take control of their lives or their finances. Fathers sent sons to school, not daughters,” she explains. “We wanted to let women know what we were trying to do and get them to join us. The show had a huge impact.

“Women worked together to learn how to grow coffee, aloe vera and vegetables. They learnt how to take care of the soil and how to manage farms. In 2000 Oxfam gave us funds for our first programme to produce and trade organic coffee.

The training continues today. We continue to train women in agricultural production, the defence of women’s rights and self-esteem.”
