Programmes
Oxfam's overseas programme aims to give long-term support to people in Africa in a way that avoids dependency. We help people to help themselves. Working through local agencies, Oxfam Ireland co-operates with implementing local partners and other Oxfams.

Livelihoods
Focusing on Africa we encourage the economic activity of people living in poverty. We do this through the promotion of land rights and fair trade and by encouraging communities to adopt more sustainable livelihood practices. We help poor people to generate income and to improve agricultural output. We influence policy makers to establish equitable trade policies and to build adequate market structures.
Emergency Programmes
Oxfam Ireland responds to major emergencies. The Oxfam International network has a large and experienced emergency resource base - this enables Oxfam Ireland to respond rapidly, saving lives and reduce suffering.
HIV/AIDS
We support local organisations to work in the prevention of HIV/AIDS and to care for those who are ill. We also address the social and economic consequences of the disease and to take account of these consequences in our work both in Ireland and in Africa. We continue to challenge trade organisations, governments, drug companies, and others to make decisions that will help to improve the health of millions of poor people by providing access to affordable generic medicines.
Oxfam also supports local groups to lobby for the rights of those infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.
Basic Education
Oxfam believes every child in the world should have a basic education and this is the reason for Oxfam International's global Education Campaign. We believe that the provision of education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty that keeps Africa the global epicentre of HIV/Aids.
Gender Based Violence Study in Humanitarian Programmes
A Consortium of Irish human rights, humanitarian and development agencies, including Oxfam Ireland together with Development Cooperation Ireland, recently commissioned a study of existing research and best practice thinking in relation to responding to gender based violence in our programmes.
