Oxfam Ireland commits extra funding to Uganda Floods

Oxfam Ireland has committed extra funding to help those most affected by the recent severe flooding in Uganda, it has been announced.

Dr Brian Scott, Oxfam Ireland's Chief Executive, said: "We have allocated an additional emergency funding package of £95,830 to increase the provision of safe water, sanitation, and other basic essentials.

"As an immediate relief measure Oxfam has already distributed jerry-cans, blankets, sanitary materials, and cooking utensils to help the victims of the floods cope in the short term.

"Up to 300,000 people have been displaced as water destroyed houses and belongings, and ruined crops. Food prices have soared, and there is a real fear of cholera from contaminated water sources. The number of people needing assistance in the medium term may well continue to rise", added Dr Scott.

"The disruption to communications could also affect the conduct of the ongoing peace talks between the government and leaders of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). If this happens, we hope very much it is only temporary, and that progress will continue in bringing to an end the 25-year civil war, which has disrupted so severely the lives of more than two million people."

Oxfam's response covers two districts in eastern Uganda, which are not covered by other aid agencies, as well as two further areas in the worst-affected Teso region.
