Darfur by numbers
- The Darfur crisis is now over five years old (2003-2008)
- There are now 4.3 million people in Darfur who are conflict-affected and in need of humanitarian assistance
- At least 2.7 million Darfuris have fled their homes (2.4m of them becoming IDPs in Darfur; the rest becoming refugees in Chad )
- Over 180,000 people have been displaced in the first half of 2008. Over 300,000 people were displaced in Darfur in 2007. GOS and militia attacks continue to account for an estimated two-thirds of new displacement.
- Oxfam currently assists around 400,000 people in Darfur . We have 400 staff - 25 of whom are internationals from outside Sudan . Our current annual budget in Darfur is about £ 6 million ($12m). Our smallest programme locations are Kass and Shangil Tobai, each assisting about 30,000 beneficiaries, while our largest is in Kebkabiya, assisting more than 100,000.
- At least 137 humanitarian vehicles have been hijacked in the first half of 2008. More than 40 drivers have been abducted and are still missing. Eight aid workers have been killed so far this year.
- There are nearly 15,000 humanitarian workers in Darfur . 95% of them are Sudanese working for international organisations (there are less than 1,000 international staff). There are about 80 international NGOs and Red Cross/Red Crescent organisations working in Darfur , plus 14 UN agencies
- The malnutrition rate recorded at the end of 2007 was 16.1% across Darfur - just above the emergency levels of 15%
- The UNAMID peacekeeping force is supposed to have 26,000 personnel. A year after it was agreed, it currently has less than 10,000
- The area of Darfur is around 106,000 square miles. It's the size of France or Texas , and almost twice the size of the UK . It's bigger than Iraq and nearly as big as Afghanistan .
- The number of people killed during the Darfur crisis is unconfirmed. Most reports say around 200,000 . The U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator John Holmes recently said 300,000 might have died. Some activist groups claim 400,000 have been killed. The Government of Sudan claims only 9,000 have died.
- The second civil war between northern and southern Sudan lasted 22 years (1983-2005). It killed an estimated 2 million people, and left around 4 million displaced or refugees.
