Why Climate Change?
"This has been the worst drought that has ever happened here... The last severe drought before this was in 1974, but during 1974 all the animals did not die... [This] drought destroyed all the crops, the drought killed all kinds of livestock like cows, goats and sheep and there was no milk and no food at all".
Climate change is a huge issue right now: with individuals, companies and governments pondering the impact that their actions will have on future generations. The real scandal is that in the developing world the impact of climate change is being felt already: right now.
People like Olmwalmui Lukeine in Tanzania (pictured above) are already suffering longer, more frequent and more severe droughts than have been seen before. Elsewhere floods, storms and cyclones are leaving poor communities struggling to cope.
This year, Oxfam Ireland will be stepping up its campaigning on climate change. Very soon these pages will feature practical ways you can help us to fight climate poverty.
