WHOCARESABOUTKENYA?
After two years of failed rains, Kenya is on a
countdown to disaster. The way of life for the
region's pastoralists of Northern Kenya is under
threat. 70% of their cattle are dead. Three and a
half million lives are on the line. And still the
international community drags its heels. Four
months since the world was warned and only
50% of the aid required has actually been given.
The pastoralists themselves are describing this as
a "drought with no comparison". The long rains
should currently be at their peak, but all that
has fallen are a few showers that cause flash
floods on the baked ground, washing away the
hopes of the people.
Abdikadir from Wajir: "We've been waiting three nights since the last delivery of water. We use the water for drinking, and, if we have food, for cooking. We don't use it for washing, we don't share with the animals. The nearest water is about 30-40km away and people are often sick after drinking it, and the animals often die". No one should be in any doubt about what this means. Three and a half million people, mainly pastoralists, are at extreme risk. People are already dying. The Irish and UK governments have contributed to the UN appeal but other countries could still do more. Oxfam is urging rich countries to contribute to the UN appeal much more generously and quickly. There are zero excuses.
It's not too late to stop the countdown to
disaster. There are things you can do right now
that will make a real difference. Visit our
