A CRUCIAL YEAR FOR ARMS CONTROL

In June a landmark UN conference on small
arms controls takes place in New York. For the
sake of millions of men, women and children
who live in continual fear of armed violence,
world leaders must seize this historic
opportunity to begin negotiations on an Arms
Trade Treaty.
Lack of controls on the arms trade is fuelling conflict, poverty and human rights abuses worldwide. Every government is responsible.
The Control Arms campaign is asking governments to toughen up controls on the arms trade. "In 2006, the world has a choice. Either it continues to ignore the massive human cost of arms proliferation or it finally acts to control the arms trade," said Colin Roche, Advocacy and Campaigns Executive of Oxfam Ireland.
No one but a criminal would knowingly sell a gun to a murderer, yet governments can sell weapons to regimes with a history of human rights violations or to countries where weapons will go to war criminals.
Our Million Faces petition is collecting photos and self-portraits from around the world to reach our goal of one million faces by June 2006. We will use these faces to send a powerful, global message of support to the world's governments for an International Arms Trade Treaty.
