WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO WITH OXFAM IRELAND?

MAKE A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION TO GET FIT AND FIGHT POVERTY!

There are lots of ways you can support us this year and get fit at the same time! Some dates for your diary:

Bupa 10K run - Dublin 9th April
Third World Run - Belfast 21st May
Dublin Mini Marathon 5th June
Dublin Marathon 29th October

You could also climb, walk, cycle, run or do a triathlon - the sky is the limit! For example, one of our volunteers is training to do the Malin to Mizen Head cycle, which can be done at any time of the year. Sponsorship cards, t-shirts and lots of encouragement are available from the Oxfam Ireland fundraising team!

OXFAM IRELAND MARKS WORLD AIDS DAY IN IRELAND AND TANZANIA

Every December 1st the International Community marks World AIDS Day. HIV and AIDS is now a reality for 40 million people worldwide and Oxfam Ireland believes that tackling HIV/AIDS is key to all our work.

On World AIDS day Oxfam Ireland funded a charity called UZIKWASA to hold a three day festival in Pangani, in the Tanga Region of Tanzania. This festival brought together artists, HIV/AIDS activists, theatre groups and local communities in both commemorating World AIDS Day and providing prevention information and support to festival goers.

Here in Ireland Oxfam joined forces with other Irish NGOs to organise a number of events including a media event with Dublin's Lord Mayor and advertisements to help promote this year's message - STOP AIDS!

Make the promise. Anyone travelling down Dublin's Quays couldn't help but see the flags! Also, World AIDS Day was the day that Oxfam Ireland's Africa Cycle Trio set off on their daunting mission to cycle from Dublin to Cape Town! At the time of writing the intrepid three have just arrived in Egypt. Best of luck guys!

Oxfam Ireland has HIV/AIDS specific programmes in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. We help enable locally based community organisations to work effectively on prevention and care while recognising the importance of addressing the gender dimensions of the epidemic and the way in which women and girls are adversely affected by cultural, traditional and social factors over which they have little control.

Thank you so much for the HUGE success you helped make the Unwrapped alternative gift scheme this year. We estimate that we have doubled the amount of gifts sold from the previous year - imagine how many people in poor countries will be glad of this news! Don't forget, you can still purchase these quirky gifts at any time of the year for birthdays, weddings, Mothers Day, Fathers Day, and anything you like really!
