Red Letter Day for Green Weddings!

May 2009

Jaime Winstone for Oxfam's Sustain Campaign | Photo by RankinSunday 28 June is a definite diary date for those considering an ethical approach to getting married. A red letter day for green weddings, ‘Say I Do to Green' is Ireland's first green wedding fair featuring a fashion show hosted by Oxfam Ireland plus demonstrations and makeovers.

Held at Castle Espie Wetland Centre outside Comber in Co. Down, the event will offer up planet-conscious alternatives from vintage and new dresses through to locally-sourced flowers and ethical favours. Importantly it will illustrate how luxury doesn't have to come at a cost either financially or environmentally, which is particularly poignant given climate change and the current economic situation.

From a conservation perspective, Castle Espie has always championed sustainability in its approach to environmental issues which reflects in all activities. Ireland's first green lifestyle event, The Green Living Fair, took place ten years ago at the centre and current developments at the wetlands will result in a new visitor centre and restored habits making it one of the few sustainable venues for events, conferences, educational pursuits and weddings.

Castle Espie holds a license for wedding ceremonies and is offering a complimentary wedding ceremony at the centre as part of an overall prize for one lucky bride-to-be. The unique wedding package promotion to complement the fair will include a new dress from Oxfam Ireland's Bangor-based bridal loft , a local short break courtesy of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, free venue hire at Ballydugan Mill for up to 70 people (between Monday and Thursday) plus a free bridal suite for the bride and groom and a £100 voucher redeemable from Re:Store retail outlets. Completing the package, other exhibitors are donating products and services to include an organic wedding cake, a hand-made tiara, locally-sourced flowers and designer hemp and silk bloomers. The draw will take place at the event.

Helping to carry the green wedding message beyond the event and throughout the year is Castle Espie's own wedding yearbook. The Little Green Wedding Book will be available at the event and in good newsagents throughout Ireland . All proceeds go to wetland conservation locally and worldwide.

Although access to the wedding fair, shop and restaurant is free, normal admission applies to the wetlands. Castle Espie opening hours are Monday to Friday 10.30am to 5.00pm; Saturday and Sunday 11.00am to 5.00pm.
