Fair Trade for Our World: World Fair Trade Day is Saturday, May 10th

World Fair Trade DayOn Saturday, May 10th, Fair Trade Organisations from all over the world, including over 2,300 Fair Trade Shops throughout Europe, will celebrate World Fair Trade Day.

Marginalised communities in developing countries have some of the lightest environmental footprints in the world. However, they are also the people whose food security, livelihoods and homes are most threatened by climate change and environmental destruction. The present economic system, led by unfair trade rules, undermines people and the environment.

Buying Fair Trade products is a practical way for Irish consumers to show their support for these artisans and farmers and guarantee that they are paid and treated fairly. Your purchase makes a difference.

Fair Trade products use low-impact manufacturing methods; raw materials are primarily natural and always sourced locally. Products are created by hand and are not capital and oil intensive. Many are made completely of recycled materials, and we encourage artisans to develop more of these. We assist artisans with sustainable production methods and packaging.

This World Fair Trade Day Oxfam Ireland asks you to do two things:

  • Ask where products come from and how they are sourced; always purchase a Fair Trade product where one exists – there's something for everyone whether it's jewellery, children's gifts, home décor, tshirts or chocolate – and enjoy it!
  • Join Oxfam Ireland in campaigning to change the rules of world trade.

Check out www.wftday.org for a list of messages and activities from the thousands of people around the world celebrating World Fair Trade Day.

This campaign is coordinated by IFAT, the global network of Fair Trade Organizations. It links and promotes Fair Trade Organizations, and speaks out for greater justice in world trade. It sets the gold standard for organizations who have Fair Trade at the heart of their mission. Oxfam Ireland is the only member of IFAT in Ireland .

IFAT has members in 70 countries, encompassing approximately 1 million people who all believe that trade should improve the lives of marginalized people without harming the planet. Its membership represents the Fair Trade chain from production to sale, including producer co-operatives and associations, export marketing companies, importers, retailers, national and regional Fair Trade networks and financial institutions
