This year the Oxfam Shop in Rathmines celebrates its 25th birthday!

Oxfam Rathmines ShopOpening its doors for the first time in 1982, Oxfam Rathmines was originally just one unit located at number 204 Lower Rathmines road. As business increased, it expanded into 202 as well. Initially the shop just sold clothes and items donated by the public. Subsequently, half of the shop was given over to selling Fair Trade items but over time the decision was made to change that part of the shop into a bookshop. However, Fair Trade foodstuffs continued to be stocked due to the roaring trade in coffees, chocolate and other food items.

The donated part of the shop continues to do very well. A wide range of clothes are on offer, from sober business suits to funky tops for nights-out, high heels to hiking boots, bags, hats, jewellery and bric a brac. The music section has a good mix of cd's, DVDs, records, videos and cassettes and covers all tastes in music from Led Zeppelin and the Beatles to Mary O'Hara and Mozart!

Every few months the shop staff creates a big window display of paintings and pictures which is always very popular. Their antique promotions which happen two or three times a year also always draw a big crowd.

After 25 years, trade is still brisk. This is greatly helped by a good position in a busy neighbourhood, a steady stream of loyal donors and a committed and hardworking team of volunteers.

Come in and visit if you are in Rathmines, there is something to suit all tastes and pockets.
