Many individual African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries have signed interim agreements with the EU - with negotiations continuing this year.

Although the picture is complicated we need to keep up the pressure to let the EU know that anything which doesn't safeguard the interests of poor people is simply unacceptable.

I was disappointed to learn about the deals which have been signed by the EU with many African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries in the wake of the Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations. I am worried that the agreements as they stand threaten livelihoods, government revenue and the ability of poor countries to manage their economies in the interests of their people. I am deeply concerned that negotiations during 2008 could lead in many cases to even harsher terms for developing countries. Please use your influence to make sure that the EU reconsiders the agreements. The EU must: - Give ACP countries more time to open their markets and adjust, and not force them into damaging premature liberalisation of services and other areas - Introduce adequate safeguards for countries struggling to adapt - Pledge to stop using unfair pressure during 2008 negotiations Thank you for reading this email.
