No more cuts in Irish Aid Budget: take action now

As the government considers a new budget in early April, call on them to ensure that the aid budget is protected from further cuts and demand that Ireland, despite these difficult times, does not abandon people living in poverty and remains committed to supporting the fight against poverty and injustice. It was with dismay that I recently heard of the cuts to Ireland's aid programme. These are, of course, difficult times for us all. However, even with the current recession, Ireland remains one of the wealthiest countries in the world and our lives are, in general, not comparable to the lives of people who live on only one or two dollars a day. As the recession deepens the most vulnerable people will, as always, be the most affected. The current recession is already affecting people right across the globe, with tens of millions of people set to be pushed into poverty in 2009. We cannot and should not abandon our commitment to tackle poverty now when it is most needed. I therefore urge you to ensure that Ireland’s aid budget is protected from further cuts and that the government continues towards achieving the UN aid target of 0.7% by 2012, as promised.
