“Oxfam has been instrumental in assisting many homeless clients of mine who are in great need of all household possessions. They provide one of the best services in Belfast for helping people acquire the necessary furniture and ‘white goods’ essential for a return to a settled way of life. Their staff are warm and helpful, the goods sold are affordable and much appreciated and their support is invaluable. Overall, an excellent service.”

“As a new customer at Oxfamhome Dublin Road, I was surprised by the very high standards both in the floor layouts and cleanliness of the shop itself. I was also pleased with the variety and value of the furniture on show. The staff were enthusiastic and knowledgeable with a pro-active attitude towards customer service. I would encourage everyone to shop there as I certainly will myself in the future.”

“I have always found the staff at the Oxfam Dublin Road shop to be courteous and professional. As I landlord I require good quality affordable furniture, all of which complies with the fire and safety regulations. This keeps my tenants safe and comfortable and myself compliant with my legal obligations; the same goes for electrical appliances which I know have been fully tested. This means I can always buy with confidence from Oxfamhome.”
Neil Cree, Landlord
Oxfamhome in Belfast is now offering residents of Greater Belfast, North Down and Lisburn the opportunity to avail of a special collection service to declutter their homes of unwanted furniture.
The furniture collection scheme, which is part of Oxfam Ireland’s ClearURGear initiative, will see the Oxfamhome van visit areas in Greater Belfast, North Down and Lisburn from early March. So if you have good quality furniture that you are no longer using and wish to donate to a good cause, call 028 9032 5546 to arrange for it for it to be collected from your address and delivered to the Oxfamhome shop on Belfast’s Dublin Road.
Chris Murray, Oxfamhome Shop Manager, explains: “It’s time for a healthy spring clean of your house. In these credit crunch-hit times, they say that it’s best not to move home, but to improve your home. And what better way to improve than to declutter? As well as clearing a space in your house, you will be helping us to raise vital funds to fight poverty in the developing world.”
For example, if the sale of your unwanted kitchen table and chairs raises even just £45, that is enough to provide school dinners for 750 children in an Oxfam programme supporting AIDS orphans, while £25 from the sale of an unused bookcase or bedside cabinet could pay for a goat to give a family in Northern Uganda milk to drink, fertiliser for their crops and kids to add to their herd.
“You will also be helping those local people who may be finding it difficult to make ends meet by providing more of the good quality affordable furniture which is for sale in Oxfamhome”, added Mr Murray. “So if you don’t need it, clear it!”

The Dublin Oxfamhome shop and Oxfam’s retail manager John Adams were recently the subject of a very interesting profile in The Irish Times, by journalist Fiona Tyrrell.
The shop, which is conveniently located on the capital’s antiques strip, attracts a very varied clientele – first-time homeowners and landlords looking to make some savings, antique dealers looking for some hidden treasures and young hipsters looking to bag a retro chic sideboard. Donors are just as varied. Oxfamhome recently got a delivery from the Grand Hotel in Malahide, which is undertaking a revamp.
The headboards, mirrors, bedside lockers and desks have been walking out the door.
The selection on offer at the shop is eclectic and the prices attractive. A new-looking Phillips CD player with speakers has a price tag of €35. TVs cost around €50. Futons are from €100, three-piece suites from €150 and a vintage Singer sewing machine costs €40.
Oxfam Ireland’s volunteer magazine, The Engine Room, recently received a letter with a lovely compliment from a satisfied Dublin Road Oxfamhome customer:
Congratulations on your renewed furniture shop in Dublin Road, a great help to landlords like me. My reason for writing is to compliment you on your employee Stuart Laffin. He was extremely professional in his dealings with me, and even had the time and interest to include a personal note with his receipt, encouraging me to do more business with Oxfam in the future, which I certainly will.
All the very best with your venture.
Sincerely yours
Noeleen Burns, Oxfamhome customer, Belfast
