Dermot O'Neill

Dermot O'Neill"I wholeheartedly endorse the good work that Oxfam do all over the world. I consider it an honour to be asked to be involved with the Oxfamgarden 'Grow for Africa' campaign. You don't need to be an expert to get involved. By growing the Oxfam Ireland range of seeds you are contributing to a worthwhile and valuable cause while at the same time reaping the pleasures and joy of growing plants too."

Dermot O'Neill's Tips for Seed Sowing

Dermot has the following tips for getting fantastic results from your Oxfamgarden seeds:

  1. Before sowing seeds, moisten them with a little water. This will help to promote even germination.
  2. Add very fine dust-like seed to some dry silver sand. This will make them easier to sow and to spread evenly over the compost.
  3. The use of a heated seed propagator can make an enormous difference when it comes to germinating seeds. Look out for new varieties that are designed to sit on window ledges.
  4. Hygiene is the key to growing seeds successfully. Make sure that pots and containers are washed and clean before use.
  5. Always label your seedlings, putting the date and the name of what you have sown. This is especially valuable when you're sowing many different types or slow-germinating seeds.

Diarmud Gavin

Diarmud Gavin

Diarmuid Gavin helped to launch Oxfamgarden on 26 August, 2005, at the Willowbank Community Centre in Dungannon. There he met gardeners with physical disabilities and visual impairments who have gained an enormous amount of pleasure from tending their Oxfamgarden crops.

Diarmuid said: "It's great to see Oxfam getting involved in the gardening sector and I fully support this project and look forward to seeing this project expand across Ireland."
