Oxfam Ireland provides an eclectic mix for Electric Picnic
Oxfam Ireland Press Release
29 August 2008
Wellies and wedding dresses, furniture made from donated clothes, an interactive graffiti wall, an open mic area and the start of an all-island ‘guitar relay’ – just some of the highlights festival-goers can enjoy courtesy of Oxfam Ireland’s biggest ever presence at this weekend’s Electric Picnic (29th – 31st August).
As one of two colourful, eye-catching tents, the mobile Oxfam Ireland shop makes its return selling second-hand, Vintage clothes and accessories to kit out revellers in the required festival chic.
“As well as keeping festival-goers cosy with blankets and wellies, we will also have wedding dresses on sale for those wanting to visit the inflatable wedding chapel”, says Nyree Tubritt, Oxfam Ireland’s District Retail Manager.
The adjoining tent sees the Oxfam Ireland Campaigns team host a space where people can use their own creativity and raise awareness. Use the supplied materials to customise clothes and make personalised T-shirts with your own logos and drawings; or express yourself as you add your own piece of graffiti (image or text) to the wall surrounding the Body and Soul area. With an inspirational theme of creativity and social activism, also on show will be the unique festival furniture designed by Hugo Thompson, whose ethical ‘trouser bench’ creations use fashion to demonstrate ways to stop climate change.
Oxjam Officer Michelle Hardiman said: “You can also express yourself via Oxfam Ireland’s in-tent open mic area, which will feature some very special guest performers from the Electric Picnic line-up to promote Oxjam, the D.I.Y. music festival that raises awareness and money for Oxfam during October.
“Discover how you can get involved with organising music-themed events in your area or even how you or your band could feature alongside some of Ireland’s top acts on a fantastic Oxjam CD to be given away free with a forthcoming issue of Hot Press magazine. Electric Picnic will also see the legendary Oxjam Guitar begin its epic all-island guitar relay tour of Oxfam Ireland shops and Oxjam venues, being signed by some headline performers along the way.”
See it and hear it all for yourself at this weekend’s Electric Picnic by visiting Oxfam Ireland’s tents in the late night boulevard area, opposite the side entrance to Body and Soul.
