Oxfam continues aid effort despite upsurge in conflict in Chad capital
Oxfam International Press Release
2 February 2008
International agency Oxfam is continuing its aid effort in Chad despite the latest upsurge in fighting in the capital. Oxfam says that all its staff are safe and its humanitarian work, which is reaching more than 100,000 people with water, sanitation and public health promotion, continues in Eastern Chad.
"All our staff are safe and those outside the capital are continuing to deliver the aid effort. However the future is uncertain and we are concerned that if security gets worse it could affect the aid reaching those already displaced from previous fighting, not only in Chad but refugees from Darfur and Central African Republic," said Raphael Sindaye, Acting Regional Director for Oxfam in West Africa.
There are nearly half a million people displaced in Eastern Chad. Most of them are refugees from the Darfur conflict. Oxfam’s aid effort has been reaching more than 100,000 people with clean water, safe sanitation, food and public health promotion.
