STOP CLIMATE CHAOS GEARS UP TO CAMPAIGN TO THE MUSIC AT OXEGEN
Oxfam Ireland Press Release
26 June 2007
Stop Climate Chaos Ireland, the umbrella group of Irish development, environment, youth and faith groups, will be heading to Oxegen on July 7th, 8th to gather support for its campaign to reduce Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions, combat global warming and support developing countries which are already bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change.
Dozens of Stop Climate Chaos campaigners will roam the Punchestown site over the weekend to talk to festival goers about runaway climate change and explain what Ireland needs to do to combat it. Stop Climate Chaos campaigners is aiming to gather 30,000 signatures at Oxegen for its petition which will be handed over to the Irish government later this year. A one minute video clip on climate change will also be played on the main stage screens over the weekend.
For those attending the festival, Stop Climate Chaos' top tips on how to be a 'green' festival-goer include:
- 1. Take public transport to and from the festival. If driving is your only option fill your car full with fellow festival goers!
- 2. Over 5,000 non-biodegradable tents and nearly as many sleeping bags are deserted each year at Irish festivals. If you are bringing your own tent with you, please make sure to bring it home with you. The same applies to your rubbish - take it home and recycle it.
- 3. Recycling bins will be located across the site. Instead of tossing away your empty plastic cups and plates consider reusing them or place them into recycling containers.
This year's Oxegen festival falls on the same weekend as the Al Gore global Live Earth concerts. The 7 continent Live Earth shows aim to raise awareness on climate change. Stop Climate Chaos will be broadcasting the Live Earth concerts on Saturday from its tent at Oxegen.
