Oxfam Ireland Dublin to Capetown Challenge - Update

25 January 2006

New Years Resolutions with a Difference!!

Cyclists in PisaOn 1st of December 2005, World Aids Day, three brave Irish twenty somethings, Juliet Wolfe, Paul Tuthill and Paddy Frankel (from Cork and Dublin), set off on a journey that has never been done before - to cycle from Dublin to Cape Town in South Africa - over 14,500 km!

Their mission is to raise as much awareness and desperately needed funds as possible to help tackle the rising HIV/AIDS epidemic that is crippling Africa. To date, the cyclists have raised more than €15,000 for Oxfam Ireland's HIV/AIDs programmes.

One month on and they have just left Pompei in Southern Italy (2,500km into their journey!) and so far so good! The weather as expected, was bitter. "There were times when you simply had to laugh aloud as a way of dealing with the cold!!" say the trio.

"We are all really excited about crossing from Europe into, what for the 3 of us, is a larger unknown. We are all in good shape at the moment, Julie really is drilling into us laid back boys the importance of stretching! Our longest day to date was 180km & the temptation to "stretch in the morning" has to be ignored!" says Paul.

Amongst the cyclists New Years resolutions are:

They have an even better reason to keep these up than most of us!!
