Oxfam Ireland disappointed at delay in delivering aid promise
October 15th 2005
Oxfam Ireland today expressed disappointment at the Government's
announcement of a new target date of 2012 for Ireland's long-standing
commitment to spend 0.7% of GNP on overseas aid, originally promised for
2007.
"We're disappointed that the government has chosen to delay meeting its
overseas aid commitment till 2012, when we believe it should be 2010 at the
latest. The delay means that extremely poor people will be deprived of
much-needed resources", said Colin Roche, Advocacy Officer for Oxfam
Ireland.
"The government must now deliver on the timetable it has set and also take
legislative measures to ensure that this commitment is honoured by future
governments. The government must also publish its commitment for each and
every year till we reach 0.7%. We can then be proud of delivering on our
promise to the world's poorest".
