Fighting Crime With Comedy

Oxfambooks on Parliament Street (Dublin 2). was robbed on Friday 4th June last. A single thief emptied the till of an afternoon's takings. Luckily no-one was hurt, but Oxfambooks staff and volunteers were very upset and disappointed at the loss of money which would have gone to Oxfam Ireland's vital work overseas.

On hearing of the robbery, comedian Ed Byrne swung into action and organised a fundraiser at the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival. The gig, which took place yesterday (Monday 6th) at lunchtime, featured Ed Byrne, Andrew Maxwell, Colin Murphy and Dara O'Briain. "It was a bit like a works outing for The Panel" Dara O'Briain said.

The gig was a huge success and raised enough to replace the stolen money twice over. One audience member said "it was the best tenner I spent all weekend."
