CADA launches MAKE POVERTY HISTORY in Northern Ireland
“Stormont Wears A White Band”
The Coalition of Aid and Development Agencies in Northern Ireland (CADA), in association with Carmel Hanna MLA, will publicly launch MAKE POVERTY HISTORY in Northern Ireland at Parliament Buildings, Stormont on Monday 31st January 2005 at 9.45-10.30am.
MAKE POVERTY HISTORY is the official campaign of UK Development Agencies, Trade Unions and civil society calling for the mobilisation of resources and political will in 2005 to end world poverty. The symbol of the campaign is a white band and at the launch CADA will present Northern Ireland MPs and MLAs with a white wristband to demonstrate their support.
Stormont will also feature as the latest in a string of international landmarks- from Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the UN building in New York- to be ‘virtually wrapped’ in a white band to show the growing public support for ending global poverty.
2005 is a year when the British Government plays a central role in international decision-making, hosting both G8 Summit and chairing the EU Presidency- as well as launching the final report of Tony Blair’s Commission for Africa. Members of the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign are calling for landmark pledges on overseas aid, debt relief and trade to help meet the UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The launch format will be as follows:
9.45am MPs/MLAs served Tea/Coffee in Long Gallery
10am Welcome by Carmel Hanna MLA
10.05am Brief outline of MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign by Hilary Sloan, Chair of CADA
10.15am MPs/MLAs invited to appear in photo-call on Stormont steps with white bands
