Press Room > Oxfam Ireland Press Release
January 14th 2005
The public response to Oxfam's Asia floods disaster appeal has been unprecedented.
Thanks to your great generosity, Oxfam is already assisting almost half a million people. Urgent clean water, sanitation, temporary shelter, food, and other necessities continue to be delivered across an enormous geographical area. Our work, and that of other aid agencies, has helped prevent large-scale disease outbreaks, and has saved lives as a result.
Our priority now is to ensure that money continues to move to where it is needed most.
But there is much more to do.The money you have donated will provide further relief, reconstruction, and the re-building of lives and livelihoods. This will go on for years to come, and Oxfam, as is our policy, will remain to support the devastated communities for as long as necessary.
The impact of the Tsunami has also helped wake up the world to the fate of people living many thousands of miles away. But the Tsunami is, of course, not the only emergency in the world. Oxfam will not forget the other places where we work and where much suffering continues, such as Uganda (1.6 million displaced), Darfur in the Sudan (1.5 million forced to flee), and
the anarchy of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. We hope that you, the public, also will not forget the people caught up in these other emergencies, who really need our help. In these other crises, where Oxfam continues with major commitments, we still rely upon your support.
Please, therefore, sustain your caring and generosity so that lives can be saved and human dignity restored.
