The impact you'll make
When women are treated as equals, we all reap the benefits. Take Ester Jerome Mtegule, a female farmer in Tanzania. Equipped with the seeds, tools and know-how, she increased her produce from five bags of groundnuts per year to 75!
Her increased output not only changes her own standard of living, but raises the standing of female farmers in her community. She is a beacon of hope in her village and beyond after winning our Female Food Heroes competition.
Will you help women like Ester gain access to land, tools, seeds and credit? By raising £120/€140 at your Get Together, you could make a significant contribution to our projects empowering women to stand up for their rights, become leaders in their communities and tackle domestic violence. For example, you could:
- Send four girls to school by paying for their uniforms, books and other expenses
- Train four women in the business skills they need to make a sustainable living and set up their own cooperative
- Provide 20 bags of drought-resistant seeds which flourish in tough climates to female farmers
As part of our Ending Poverty Starts with Women campaign, we invite you to play a part in creating a better future for women everywhere by inviting family, friends and colleagues to join your very own Get Together. Make a difference today.
Why it's so important
Speaking about her recent trip to Tanzania with Oxfam, our ambassador Sharon Corr explains:
“Meeting some of the women who have benefited from Oxfam’s work in Tanzania was truly inspiring. The majority of people living in poverty are women. It’s fantastic to see how Oxfam can help women reclaim their rights and make their voices heard; from supporting female farmers to tackling domestic violence.
“An Oxfam Get Together is simple. Just organise something fun with the people you love spending time with – and help raise vital funds that will transform the lives of women affected by poverty and injustice around the world.”
How to get involved
The key to a successful Get Together is to find something that you enjoy, keep it simple and have fun! And if Friday March 8th doesn’t suit you, simply pick a date that does.
At home
Cuppa and cake. There’s nothing quite like a warm cuppa and homemade cake! Or how about inviting pals around for an afternoon treat of dreamy creamy scones and speciality teas?
Dinner party. Invite your friends around for a bite to eat and a glass of wine. If you’re stuck for time, try tapas, pizza or a pot luck where everyone brings a dish.
Style swap. Ask guests to declutter their wardrobes by bringing good quality clothes. In exchange for their admission fee, they receive tokens to use to buy other items. Any leftover garments can be donated to your local Oxfam shop.
Movie Night. Give your friends something to look forward to with a special screening of an old favourite or a recent must-see. Serve a few treats, a nice cuppa or a glass of bubbly and your guests just won’t want to leave!
At Work
Bake sale. Treat your colleagues to a tea break they’ll remember with homemade treats or appeal to their competitive side with a sponsored bake-off!
Team lunch. Take over a corner of the canteen for some foody fundraising. Or why not arrange a discounted menu at a nearby restaurant and host a special long lunch?
Bring and buy book sale. Ask your colleagues to spring clean their bookshelves by bringing some unwanted books to work. Price them up ahead of your fundraiser. On the day itself, combine with tea, coffee, cake and some well-deserved downtime.
In your community
Music event.Contact a venue and get them onboard to help host your Get Together. Showcase local talent and enjoy the buzzing atmosphere.
Pub quiz. It’s a tried and trusted fundraiser that never goes out of fashion. Find a suitable venue and choose a quiz master. Compile your quiz rounds, including pictures, music or props. Local businesses are usually happy to donate prizes.
