If this is your first time taking part in a sporting event or you don’t have much time to train, then the Trailtrekker 25km route is for you! You and your team will walk along a stunning mountain trail, and with just a little preparation anyone can succeed!
How it works
Your team of between three and six people will start your trekking adventure by signing in at Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor, Co. Down. We will then transport you to the starting point of the trek. The trail is a specially designed route through the Mourne Mountains. Along the route there are four checkpoints for teams to stop briefly to rest and refuel before setting off again. The trail should be completed in less than 8 hours with many teams completing it in 6.
At the end of your trek, there will be an Oxfam Trailtrekker party to celebrate your accomplishment!
Your team will be what makes your Trailtrekker experience – you will train together, fundraise together, provide encouragement to each other along the trail and have a lot of laughs along the way! Previous teams have included work colleagues, friends, family and sports club members.
Regardless of your current fitness level, with some light training and preparation almost everyone can complete the 25km route. It’s all about being reasonably active and having a little stamina! Training for this unique event is the perfect chance to set yourself a goal to get fit and really stick to it. Training doesn’t have to be tough – it might include getting some walks in during the evenings and then heading up the Sugar Loaf or a similar local hike on a Saturday before the big day. Once you sign up, the Oxfam events team will be on hand to support you every step of the way with helpful advice and training guides.
The 25km Trailtrekker route passes through some of the most beautiful countryside on the island of Ireland. Oxfam is grateful to the landowners, councils and local trusts that work with us to ensure our route is safe for participants and causes minimum impact to the surrounding terrain.
Teams signing up for the 25km event commit to raising a minimum team amount. The total is based on the number of people who register (£210/€265 per person) and the money raised will support Oxfam’s programmes worldwide.
Around the globe, Oxfam works to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. We save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes. And we campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them.
In all we do, Oxfam works with partner organisations and alongside vulnerable women and men to end the injustices that cause poverty.
Teams should have 75% of their fundraising amount in with Oxfam one month before the event and endeavour to get the remainder of their funds in one month after the event. Don’t worry, we will provide you with lots of support to meet your fundraising target!
Please note that there is also a registration fee of £25/€30 per person. This is a personal event commitment fee and is non-refundable.
Choosing your team
Putting together your perfect Trailtrekker team will require some thought and planning. You'll depend on each other during fundraising and training – and, of course, throughout the event itself.
Tips on choosing your Trailtrekker team:
- Think about the different qualities you want in your team, whether it's energy, enthusiasm, organisational skills, fundraising ideas or an endless stream of amusing chat.
- Decide on a team leader – they'll act as the main contact between your team and the Oxfam Ireland office and will help to co-ordinate fundraising, training and logistics.
- Secure your team’s place as early as possible - places are limited!
