Best-selling author Kate Kerrigan recently opened Cork’s first ever Oxfambooks shop at 18A French Church, Street, Cork.

Lucky customers on the day heard Kate read from her new book ‘City of Hope’ to mark the official opening.

Kate said: “I’ve always been a supporter of Oxfam’s and I am thrilled to be part of the first ever Oxfambooks shop in Cork. Book shops are special places but Oxfambooks is extra special because every purchase means a positive change in the life of someone who really needs it overseas. If you spend just €10 in an Oxfam bookshop, Oxfam can buy six buckets to help families get access to water.”

Oxfambooks will offer donated books, from all genres; along with donated vinyl, CDs and DVDs. “Bring along some books on the day and help to brighten someone’s life in the developing world,” Kate urged.

This will be the second Oxfam store in Cork; Oxfam’s popular shop for all other donated stock such as clothes and homewares can be found at 10 Cook Street. Oxfam Ireland is currently highlighting its urgent need for stock through its ‘Make Space for Oxfam’ campaign.

Oxfam Ireland’s Chief Executive Jim Clarken said: “By buying and donating books, CDs and DVDs and other goods, you are helping raise funds for our vital work overseas and making a real difference.”

And what better way to do that than with an Oxfam Ireland Christmas card. Our cards are a key source of funds, raising over €70,000 for our important work overseas – all the more necessary this year with the food crisis in East Africa, including famine in Somalia.

We have a wide range of exclusive designs on our cards, enough to suit everyone on your list – from religious or cute to traditional or modern. And our cards are printed on the highest quality FSC-certified part-recycled board, and come with 100% recycled envelopes. Cards are available in cello packs (8 cards of 1 design) or boxes (20 cards, 10 each of 2 designs) and prices start at only €.175 per card!

Oxfam Ireland Christmas cards also have an impact here at home, as we print and pack our cards in Ireland, helping secure Irish jobs.

Oxfam Ireland has launched a new campaign called Make Space for Oxfam to highlight Oxfam’s shops urgent need for donations. Over the past year donations to Oxfam shops have reduced by up to 40% and stock levels are now critical in many shops.

Musician Sharon Corr and broadcasters Miriam O’Callaghan and Tom Dunne have teamed up with Oxfam to support the campaign and they each have donated an item that means something special to them. The Make Space for Oxfam campaign asks the public to donate items to Oxfam that are taking up space in people’s wardrobes, shelves and homes.

Speaking about why she Made Space for Oxfam, Sharon Corr said: “I donated a violin to Oxfam that was a special gift to me because I know that Oxfam can raise money by selling this donation to make a real difference to people living in poverty.

“Even if you only pick one item your local Oxfam shop would love it. You can be sure they will look after it, find someone else who will love it for longer, and raise as much money as possible to help poor people around the world,” said Sharon Corr.

According to research three quarters of us have bought an item of clothing and never worn it. Shoes are the items most likely to languish unworn behind closet doors, followed by eveningwear and unused handbags. Oxfam Ireland needs you to donate anything you can spare, books, CDs, DVDs, shoes, belts, handbags, dresses, shirts, trousers, suits, wedding dresses, homewares, any item of good quality that you no longer need. Every single donated item can make a difference in helping Oxfam to overcome poverty and suffering around the world.

Oxfam Ireland can raise, on average, around €35 from a donated bag of clothes in good condition; a paperback book sells for around €3 and DVDs of feature films also fetch an average of about €3. Designer jeans that retail for €90 can be sold for €18 to €20 and high street fashion brands will tend to retail at 25% to 33% of the original sale price in an Oxfam Ireland shop, depending on their condition.

There are a number of reasons identified for the reduction in the quantity of stock including an increase in commercial textile operations, an increase in price for second hand clothing and more competition in the retail charity shop sector.

Jim Clarken, Oxfam Ireland’s Chief Executive, said: “The Oxfam shop is the foundation upon which much of Oxfam Ireland’s work is built and directly supports Oxfam’s ability to respond to emergencies such as the current crisis in East Africa, where up to 13 million people face starvation. So if you have something taking up space in your life, donate it to your local Oxfam shop”.

Sharon Corr donated an electric violin that was specially designed for her by world renowned violin manufacturers Barcus-Berry. Miriam O’Callaghan donated a dress that means a huge amount to her and she wore to her son’s christening; she calls it her ‘lucky’ dress. Tom Dunne donated a David Bowie album, David Live, which he bought in Golden Discs in 1974.

Oxfam Ireland has a network of 50 stores across the island of Ireland including specialist shops such as Oxfambridal, Oxfamhome and Oxfambooks. Oxfam accepts donations of everything from clothing for men and women, to CDs and vinyl, books and home accessories.

Oxfam Ireland is a member of Oxfam International, a confederation of 15 Oxfams working together with partners and allies in 98 countries around the world to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. Oxfam works directly with communities and seeks to influence the powerful to ensure that poor people can improve their lives and livelihoods and have a say in decisions that affect them.

Oxfam Ireland has raised €1.2 million for our emergency appeal thus far, through shops North and South and through a nationwide advertising campaign in July and August.

The response from the public has been really amazing and it’s been a busy few months with events such as football matches, Croagh Patrick climbs, pub quizzes, cake sales and supermarket bag packs taking place in various parts of the country

Niall Caffrey went above and beyond the call of duty with his ‘Make me Bald’ campaign. Firstly he shaved his hair at work to ‘The Monk look’. He didn’t stop there! After work he gathered his friends in a local pub and waxed his legs, raising money by auctioning off the waxing strips – eugh! His endeavour raised a remarkable €3,669

Bernadette O’Neill undertook a fundraising gig, ‘Songs for Somalia’ in the Riverside Hotel, Co. Wexford and enlisted a fleet of volunteer helpers. Acts such as The Thingamajigs, The New Davitt Showband, Draiocht and Thunderstruck entertained everyone and their efforts raised €3,290!

One of September’s highlights will be Reelin’ in the 80’s, another music gig to be held in the Spirit Store, Dundalk on Saturday 17 September. Oxfam Ireland will also be there selling books and records in a pop-up shop. Our thanks to volunteers from the Dundalk shop for their help with this.

Our Shops

Limerick
The shop received a donation of a bicycle on the provision that proceeds go for East Africa. The bike raised €540.00 in a raffle, far more than its resale value. The Limerick shop has also done street collections and ran a collection in conjunction with one of the local parishes that generated over €2,000.

Sligo
The shop staff and volunteers did a collection in Sligo General Hospital and street collections. A volunteer created handbags and pillows out of recycled textiles and sold them in the shop.

Tralee
Staff worked with a local group on a film night with all proceeds going to our appeal.

Dundalk
Two pensioners come into the store and anonymously donated € 2,000 of their life savings.

Wexford
The store was approached by a lady who wanted to do something to help. She organised a music night in Enniscorthy that raised €3,290.

Newry
The shop organised a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with staff and volunteers in fancy dress. The event raised more than £700.

Fashion icon Twiggy is calling on Marks & Spencer customers to support Oxfam Ireland by clearing out their wardrobes this week.

On Thursday 8th September, M&S stores up and down the country will be hosting a special One Day Wardrobe Clearout event, accepting unwanted clothing and accessories that will be resold or recycled by Oxfam Ireland. The event will help Oxfam raise crucial funds and prevent clothing from going to landfill.

The national campaign has the backing of the face of M&S Woman and international icon Twiggy, who is encouraging customers to get involved. Twiggy commented: “We’re all guilty of hoarding clothes away that we no longer wear. This is a great way to rediscover those hidden treasures at the back of your wardrobe and donate any unwanted or unused pieces to Oxfam.”

The clearout event rewards customers donating clothes and accessories with a €7 money off voucher when they spend €50 on fashion in store, redeemable until 30th September. Thursday’s event is part of the year-round award winning M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange.

Richard Gillies, Director of Plan A, CSR and Sustainable Business at M&S, said: “By clearing out your wardrobe and simply dropping off your unwanted clothes and accessories at our stores, you can help the environment and help Oxfam save lives. We’re asking our customers to donate 400,000 items of clothing: an easy way to make a difference and save money on this season’s latest collections with a great M&S money-off voucher.”

Oxfam Ireland’s Stock sourcing manager Denis Duncan said: “Every single donated item, from clothing to accessories, really does make a difference in helping Oxfam to overcome poverty and suffering around the world. And for those who may miss out on the wardrobe clearout day, you can still donate your unwanted M&S clothing to any Oxfam shop, any day of the year – and get a voucher to spend at M&S too.”

Ends

Notes to editors

M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange

One Day Wardrobe Clearout is a part of the ongoing M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange. Launched in 2008 the Exchange encourages customers to recycle clothes they no longer wear. Customers who donate an item of M&S labelled clothing to an Oxfam store receive a voucher for €7 off against purchases over €50 on clothing, homeware or beauty products in M&S (valid for one month).

Since 2008, the M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange partnership has collected over 9.2 million items of clothing, diverted over 4,500 tonnes of clothing from landfill and raised over €7m for Oxfam.

Plan A

Plan A is Marks & Spencer’s eco and ethical programme which aims to make M&S the world’s most sustainable major retailer by 2015. Launched in 2007 and extended in March 2010, it takes a holistic approach to sustainability focusing on involving customers, involving all areas of the business and tackling issues such as climate change, waste, raw materials, health and being a fair partner.
