And what better way to do that than with an Oxfam Ireland Christmas card. Our cards are a key source of funds, raising over €70,000 for our important work overseas – all the more necessary this year with the food crisis in East Africa, including famine in Somalia.

We have a wide range of exclusive designs on our cards, enough to suit everyone on your list – from religious or cute to traditional or modern. And our cards are printed on the highest quality FSC-certified part-recycled board, and come with 100% recycled envelopes. Cards are available in cello packs (8 cards of 1 design) or boxes (20 cards, 10 each of 2 designs) and prices start at only €.175 per card!

Oxfam Ireland Christmas cards also have an impact here at home, as we print and pack our cards in Ireland, helping secure Irish jobs.

The third annual Oxfam Ireland TRAILTREKKER event attracted more than 400 participants to set off from Donard Park in Newcastle early on Saturday 10th September at the start of one of the most gruelling charity endurance challenges. Each team had a single goal – to complete the epic 100km or alternative 50km route and reach the finishing line at Carlingford Sailing Club inside 36 or 20 hours.

Battling the weather to walk by day and by night through the Mournes, the Ring of Gullion and the Cooley Peninsula, a team called the Dromintee 4 were the 100km winners in a record time of 15 hours and 39 minutes. Consisting of local men Ciaran McMullan, Jude Hayes, Dermot Winters and Kevin Murray, the Dromintee 4 completed the trek to arrive in Carlingford just shy of Saturday midnight after setting out from Newcastle at 8.00am that morning.

The first 50km trekkers to cross the line was mixed team from State Street Ireland, major sponsor of the event. Rebecca Fleming, Aidan Doyle, David O’Connor and Keith Geoghegan – calling themselves Incendiary Porcupine Pastille Tool 4000 (IPPT4000) – are from Dublin and finished in a time of 10 hours and 36 minutes.

The Oxfam Strollers, lead by team captain Michael Sloan, finished second overall in the 100km trek and won the title of Fastest Mixed Team for the second year running. Michael said: “With the boat crossing over Carlingford Lough, and walking through the night… it’s certainly a challenge! But it’s all worthwhile for the sense of personal achievement, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that we’ve helped Oxfam Ireland raise money for its work in Africa and around the world, such as the emergency responses to the Somalia famine.”

Winners of the Oxfam TRAILTREKKER 50km challenge are State Street's "IPPT 4000".
Hundreds of staff and volunteers work in roles such as podiatrists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, trail marshals, parking marshals, drivers and a “sweep team” to clean up after the teams. Many more lose sleep over the weekend to act as a lifeline to each team, providing them with food, band aids, hugs, clean socks – anything they need to keep walking.

Congratulations to the winners and all who took part in TRAILTREKKER 2011!

Oxfam Ireland has raised €1.2 million for our emergency appeal thus far, through shops North and South and through a nationwide advertising campaign in July and August.

The response from the public has been really amazing and it’s been a busy few months with events such as football matches, Croagh Patrick climbs, pub quizzes, cake sales and supermarket bag packs taking place in various parts of the country

Niall Caffrey went above and beyond the call of duty with his ‘Make me Bald’ campaign. Firstly he shaved his hair at work to ‘The Monk look’. He didn’t stop there! After work he gathered his friends in a local pub and waxed his legs, raising money by auctioning off the waxing strips – eugh! His endeavour raised a remarkable €3,669

Bernadette O’Neill undertook a fundraising gig, ‘Songs for Somalia’ in the Riverside Hotel, Co. Wexford and enlisted a fleet of volunteer helpers. Acts such as The Thingamajigs, The New Davitt Showband, Draiocht and Thunderstruck entertained everyone and their efforts raised €3,290!

One of September’s highlights will be Reelin’ in the 80’s, another music gig to be held in the Spirit Store, Dundalk on Saturday 17 September. Oxfam Ireland will also be there selling books and records in a pop-up shop. Our thanks to volunteers from the Dundalk shop for their help with this.

Our Shops

Limerick
The shop received a donation of a bicycle on the provision that proceeds go for East Africa. The bike raised €540.00 in a raffle, far more than its resale value. The Limerick shop has also done street collections and ran a collection in conjunction with one of the local parishes that generated over €2,000.

Sligo
The shop staff and volunteers did a collection in Sligo General Hospital and street collections. A volunteer created handbags and pillows out of recycled textiles and sold them in the shop.

Tralee
Staff worked with a local group on a film night with all proceeds going to our appeal.

Dundalk
Two pensioners come into the store and anonymously donated € 2,000 of their life savings.

Wexford
The store was approached by a lady who wanted to do something to help. She organised a music night in Enniscorthy that raised €3,290.

Newry
The shop organised a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with staff and volunteers in fancy dress. The event raised more than £700.

Irish aid agencies working to help famine victims in Somalia and neighbouring countries in East Africa say the response to their appeals for financial help has been ‘remarkable’.

Over the past six weeks, Irish people have donated €12m for famine relief, according to Dóchas, the overseas development agencies umbrella organisation.

This is in addition to the €8m being provided by the Government.

There have been several further warnings, over the past 24 hours, that the famine crisis in Somalia is worsening, with fears that up to 400,000 children there could die from disease and starvation.

Dóchas Director Hans Zomer said it was clear that Irish people had a deep understanding of the suffering famine victims were experiencing and wanted to help.

Trócaire says it has received more than €5m in donations; a further €4m has been contributed to Concern.

Trócaire’s Chief Executive Justin Kilcullen said the money had made it possible for it to rapidly expand its operations in Somalia.

He said it was getting increasing amounts of food and medical aid to famine victims – including those living in areas controlled by the fundamentalist al-Shabaab organisation – and was about to launch a new initiative to reduce the incidence of malaria among children under the age of five.

Oxfam Ireland received over €1.1m in contributions for famine relief in Africa in recent weeks.

Chief executive Jim Clarken described the amount as ‘absolutely fantastic’ at a time when many Irish people were experiencing severe financial difficulties.
