The winning team: ‘Timmehh’, from UK and Ireland, including captain Nick Dillon, Tom Blackmore, Gordon Baird and Colin Caunter, were the first team to complete Oxfam Ireland’s TRAILTREKKER 100km challenge walk by day and by night from Newcastle, Co Down, to Carlingford, Co. Louth.
Oxfam’s epic TRAILTREKKER challenge came to a close yesterday after more than 400 participants set off early on Saturday morning (4th September). Each team had a single goal – to complete the gruelling 100km route from Donard Park in Newcastle and reach the finishing line at Carlingford Sailing Club inside 36 hours.
After walking by day and by night through the Mournes, the Ring of Gullion and the Cooley Peninsula, the first team of 4 to cross the line in a time of 17 hours and 43 minutes were ‘Timmehh’, from UK and Ireland. The team members, who met while at university, were captain Nick Dillon, Tom Blackmore, Gordon Baird and Colin Caunter.
We at Oxfam Ireland were very pleased to receive a wonderful letter of support from one of our donors recently:
Please find enclosed a cheque… to pay for raffle tickets… Oxfam is my primary charity. Castlebar, the place where I work, has an Oxfam shop and I can go in and make an extra donation for a specific purpose either because disaster has struck somewhere or for a special occasion in my own life… I would like to let you know that I give money to Oxfam in good faith. There are many people in the world who live in dire circumstances and I trust Oxfam and its employees/volunteers to do the best for them that they are able to do within the given circumstances. I like it that Oxfam is a large organisation so that they have expertise in various fields and a large body of personnel to draw upon.
Oxfam Ireland and the Restaurants Association of Ireland are teaming up over the coming month to raise vital funds for Oxfam’s life-saving response in Pakistan. Over the coming weeks, patrons can choose to donate to the appeal at participating restaurants nationwide. Giving quite simply never tasted this good!
Oxfam are reaching up to 600,000 people in Pakistan with clean, drinking water, shelter, emergency supplies and disease prevention kits. Every cent raised through participating restaurants will go directly to helping the victims of the floods.

A mega disaster that needs a mega response!
A humanitarian disaster of catastrophic proportions is continuing to unfold in Pakistan – 20 million people are now affected – more people than affected by the biggest disasters of recent years combined – including the Haiti earthquake, the Asian tsunami and the Pakistan earthquake of 2005. However, the international response so far has not matched that of previous large-scale disasters.
