Meet Mr Menard, from Malawi who received Seeds from Oxfam Ireland Unwrapped:
“From the proceeds of the seeds, my family has managed to build an iron-roofed house; furnish it with a Sofa set, radio cassette and different kitchen utensils. We have fixed solar electricity in the house. We have bought a mountain bike, cattle and are building a grocery. We have enough food throughout the year. We are optimistic to a vehicle in few years to come”, said Mr. Menard

Meet Ntombizodwa Marufu from Zimbabwe who received Chicks:
“I’ve been a widow for 14 years – my husband died from HIV-related diseases. Two years ago I received seven chickens from Oxfam…. I was chosen for three reasons: because I’m a widow, I’m HIV-positive and I look after an orphan in addition to my own six children… Yesterday I sold three chickens. I’ve sold them at intervals to help uplift my family, to pay for school fees and food. The eggs are really helpful for those of us who aren’t in good health, and we sell them too.”

This year, 10 million people were affected by the Sahel food crisis and pastoral populations have been the most affected. On average, 18.3% of the population in Niger, Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso are undernourished. This figure rises to 37% for Chad.
In this context, “we should not wait another major food crisis to start acting”, warn Bilital Maroobe and international agency Oxfam. Given the rapid expansion and recurrence of the crises and the inadequate responses of policy makers and other actors, it’s necessary to rethink the strategies to implement in order to respond to these recurring disasters in West Africa.
The Cancun talks saw good progress towards a fair, ambitious and legally binding climate deal.
Whilst there’s still much work to be done, the progress in Cancun was a major step forwards. Over half a million people joined with Oxfam this year, calling for urgent action on climate change. Campaigning together means our voice was heard in Cancun and has helped us Sow the Seed for a fair climate deal:

“I sell up to 16 litres of milk a day… I believe that my children have the prospect of a bright future because I manage to send them to school because of the money that I earn from selling milk”
