Welcome to Oxfam Ireland, one of 13 Oxfams throughout the world dedicated to the alleviation of poverty and related injustice. Oxfam Ireland consists of Oxfam Northern Ireland and Oxfam Republic of Ireland working together throughout Ireland. We are independent, but increase the impact and effectiveness of all our activities by also operating closely with the other Oxfams as a confederation.
Our website gives you a snapshot of our Oxfam shops, fundraising, campaigning, humanitarian response and long-term development work. You can also find details of job opportunities with Oxfam Ireland, as well as the several other ways that you can join our movement to eliminate the injustice of profound poverty, which affects 40% of the world's people.
Every human being has a right to food, shelter, clean water, basic education and health, and safety. Oxfam Ireland links you, the person interested in, and concerned about, global poverty, with people and organisations overseas that are taking tangible steps to reduce it and its attendant suffering. We are part of a worldwide movement that regards alleviating global poverty not as charity but as an issue of fundamental rights.
Our stance means that we set about changing the world for the better not only by supporting poor people overseas directly - both in emergencies and in long-term development - but also by advocating and campaigning to change the policies and practices of those organisations that affect the lives of the profoundly poor. These include multinational institutions, such as the UN, World Trade Organisation, and the World Bank; national governments, both rich and poor; corporations, both multinational and indigenous; and any other entity with influence.
Uniquely in human history, our generation has the capability and the capacity to abolish global poverty. But what is lacking is the desire and the will on the part of decision-makers to do so. Oxfam Ireland, with others, aims to press and persuade politicians, public officials, business people, and others to put ending poverty at the top of their agendas. With enough support from people like you all around the world, we can do it.
